You Know You Love Me… XoXo

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I make no qualms about the fact that I’m a corny fangirl. I’m not ashamed of it. In fact, I get giddy when I find other fangirls like myself who I can gab with about favorite books, or shows, or characters. But one show which I started watching for a reason other than great storyline, great characters, or a trustworthy rec is Gossip Girl. My friends had talked about it a bit (around the time the Twilight movie was being cast and Chase Crawford‘s name was floating around the Twilight boards as the perfect Edward) but I had no real interest in watching it. Just wasn’t my cup of tea. Like with reading, I hardly have an interest in contemporary fiction. I don’t even really watch contemporary dramas on tv. I can do comedies… but that’s a whole different ballgame.

And then I started catching the photographs, or episode stills to be more precise. And my geeky fashion loving little heart started to pound. I wanted- nay- needed to watch this show if only to satisfy my love for all things preppy and couture. And it has never disappointed. There’s something for everyone. A little boho chic for the Serena lovers. Updated Jackie-O prep for us Blair lovers. And of course edgy rock in the form of Jenny Humphrey. How could you go wrong? I eventually came to love the characters (Blair + Chuck= onscreen magic!) but I still say that given the money I would be all over some of those fashion styles.

I was given the chance to test that theory. Ha ha. A dangerous situation, if you ask me. You see, my little sister had her prom tonight. And she generously asked me to help her choose her look for the evening. My sister is a really modern gal. She has a great body and is very bold. She can wear anything and tends to lean toward urban chic. I took her in the exact opposite direction. I made her my own little upper east sider with some Brooklyn flair, ala Little J. This was the final result:

Ignore the messy house, ok? I have a baby who makes me nutty and won’t let me put him down or he’ll cry. Ha ha. Anyway, doesn’t she look FAB!?? I was very proud of my finished product. She looked GORGEOUS. Elegant, edgy, and youthful. The theme of the party is masquerade. She didn’t actually wear the mask, but dude, I couldn’t help reenacting the GG eppy “Handmaiden’s Tale”, hence the mask. ha ha. So yea, that was my stint as fashion editor. It was fun.

In more everyday news, I’m proud to announce that I actually finished the first chapter of my high fantasy YA novel! I’m amazingly psyched about this novel, it’s a weird mix of fairytales with a Romeo and Juliet undertone. I think it’s going to be one of my favorites that I’ve ever written. I also wrote about half a scene for my fantasy sequel Zerah… I really can’t wait for the first book to be released. I love these characters more than I could say. This was that book of the heart people talked about for me. I’ve had it in mind since my first year of college. And it went through many, many incarnations before it took on a life of its own and found its voice. So although my progress is slow… at least its progress. :) I may even post a little snippet or a fave line soon, in order to get myself pumped. Look out for that!

Here’s a song I’ve been using in my writing quite a bit lately. Enjoy it. And Happy Friday!

Up My Sleeve

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I’ve got a little project I’m working on which I can’t share with you all just yet, but which I’m very excited about. It’s with my good friend, Lisa Asanuma, and I’ll definintely be telling you more about it as we get closer to reveal. ;) I know, I’m such a tease, but I can’t help it!

In the meantime, I got some actual cleaning done today and decided it was time to try and get back to work on my writing- which I’ve slacked on for almost two weeks!

Granted, I have been very busy with baby preparation, but still. That’s inexcusable. Today I got to thinking about my writing career and what I expect out of it. In order to meet my goals and expectations, I have to be consistent and WORK! Especially once Peanut gets here. I have to make good use of my time or else I’ll NEVER get any writing done!

So tonight I’m reading over what I have of my WIP and forcing my mushed brain to focus. *please focus* While I washed dishes I went over the next scene I have to write in my head, and even sharpened the dialogue that closes/transitions the scene before. So now it’s a matter of getting my thoughts on paper. Dishes and showers are really great for brainstorming, aren’t they?

In The Night It Slips Away

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I hate to do this, guys, but this is sort of a post and run. I’m on a tight schedule tonight. I worked until 6pm, and I have to open the store tomorrow at 7am, which means I only have a few hours to write before I have to pass out, uh, fall sleep. I don’t want to hit the hay too late, or tomorrow will be a nightmare. I’m sure you all understand. ;)

My schedule can be so frustrating sometimes. I mean, writing is my second part-time job, no matter how I may try to rationalize it as a hobby. I’m published, and I hope to find an agent and be represented, so it’s really gone past the hobby stage. Still, I miss those late nights where I wrote until 2am. Where I could knock out an entire chapter in one sitting. I’m lucky if I get a page or two done at a time now. And that’s on a good night! If I can focus! Most nights, I’m sitting in front of the television feeling BRAINDEAD. *sigh*

Ok, no more complaining. It’s back to work. What did you all do today? Come on, entertain me with some fun stories, anecdotes, what you’re reading, what you’re watching, ANYTHING. I’ll look at it when I start to procrastinate. :)

Book 2 Lives

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Ok. I feel I should explain what the drama with my WIP is. Ha, ha. At the climax, the story splits into its second half, currently lovingly called Book 2. It’s the characters’ story continued but in such a different way, it’s practically a new book. I struggled a lot with how to get that to work in a way that made some sense. I think I’ve finally got it. :D

So everyone, welcome Book 2 into the world. I believe it is here to stay.

DWQ: (although not necessarily about writing, I found this quote fascinating)

Celebrity is the chastisement of merit and the punishment of talent.”Emily Dickinson

Although getting recognized and becoming a famous author is great, I do believe celebrity comes with restrictions and expectations that can really stifle creativity.  I strive to be somewhere in between. A well recognized author who can still do something outlandish, and get a whole new group interested in what I have to say.

Today’s beautiful picture comes from girltripped @ deviantart. I LOVE her gallery, as you will notice from all the pics I put here from her. :D

Some Progress is Better than No Progress

Friday, July 13th, 2007

So I gotta admit, the Blog-o-sphere feels a bit empty with so many people off at RWA. I bet they’ll have all sorts of goodies to share with us when they get back. In the meantime, I do have a few other fun things to occupy my time.

Romance Divas has been having holding a “Not going to Nationals” conference. A way to help us who were unable to make it for whatever reason feel a little less left out. ;)

Midnight Moon Cafe is holding their anniversary celebration. That’s been fun at every corner. I really love it there. :D Check it out, I’m sure you’ll find something of interest. An author, a flash fiction, a wereanimal. They’ve got it all.

I finally managed to add another 550 words to my WIP. Not a lot, but I’m putting just a bit in, little by little. I was having some trouble with a few scenes so I brainstormed. Got some great notes down. Now it’s only a matter of actually sitting down to write. Sometimes, that in itself seems so impossible. I find a million other things to do instead! I have to learn discipline.

In the meantime, I guess some progress is better than none, right? I’ll keep chugging along until I find another writer’s high. There are little pockets of it everywhere. I just feel like Mario, from Super Mario Bros. Always having to traverse secret worlds to find it. :D
